Can you feel sad when someone else feels sad?

I mean can you feel sad when someone you know feels sad even though you don't know what they are going through but you shared the same feeling? at a distance not being in the same place. For instance say you are in |Alabama and the other person is in Texas can you know feel what the other is feeling say he or she is feeling sad can you feel the same? If t there was a close bound.??? orr Is it a crazy feeling????
