Please help. Woman in 50s having sudden dementia?

Did the doc do any tests at all on her to rule out other problems? If not, I suggest she go somewhere else. And if it is an emotional problem, then I suggest that she sees a psychiatrist, as he would be able to determine the type of medication she should have.
